In fact, more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-04-26\/shipping-containers-plunge-overboard-as-supply-race-raises-risks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3,000 shipping containers fell overboard<\/a>\u00a0in 2020. And as of April 2021, over 1,000 boxes have already fallen into the ocean.\u00a0<\/p><p>Why are incidents of containers going overboard on the rise? Weather is becoming more severe and unpredictable and new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.locktoninternational.com\/gb\/articles\/re-evaluating-risk-mega-ships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mega vessels<\/a>\u00a0are often being loaded to maximum capacity. Incidents causing carriers to declare General Average have been increasing in recent years: Severe storms are becoming more frequent, and shockingly, fires on container ships are more common.<\/p><p>When a carrier declares\u00a0<a id=\"__hsNewLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shippingandfreightresource.com\/what-is-general-average\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cGeneral Average\u201d<\/a>, all stakeholders, including cargo owners, must pay their cost of saving the vessel and cargo \u2013 even if their own cargo is not affected. Adjustors will assess the situation and determine the\u00a0<em>Salvage security<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>General Average security<\/em>. These securities are variable percentages of the CIF (cost, insurance, and freight) value of the cargo that the shipper has on the affected vessel. The cargo owner must pay both to get their cargo released, otherwise they forfeit their cargo and it becomes property of the salvage company.<\/p><p><strong>The cost of protecting your shipments is miniscule compared to the cost of a\u00a0<em>General Average<\/em>\u00a0claim.<\/strong><\/p><p>For example, after a 2018 fire on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/shipowner-declares-general-average-for-ever-given\/\">Maersk Honam<\/a>, GA was declared and the adjustor fixed the salvage security at 42.5% of cargo value and 11.5% as a GA deposit \u2013 this meant a shipper with cargo worth $100,000 needed to pay a combined deposit of $54,000 to get its cargo released. Ouch! Insurance for this shipment, by comparison, would have been just $165.00.\u00a0<\/p><p>If you\u2019re insured with UWL\u2019s Policy, the insurance company will issue an Average Guarantee and you will provide an Average Bond.
